The Offside Rule For Dummies
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-09

As with every World Cup, new soccer fans will start watching the fixtures and fall in love with the game. Although, soccer is a pretty straightforward sport, the offside rule seems to always elude new as well as old fans.

So here’s a simple definition. A player is in an offside position, when, within the opponent’s half, he finds himself behind the last opposing defender (hence between the other team’s keeper and last defender) at the moment the ball is played to him (not when the ball reaches him, but when the ball is actually played/sent to him or in his direction).

You will notice that in theory, the referee doesn’t call an offside position, if the ball is not played to the player in the offside position; hence, the play will only get whistled down, if the player in the offside position influences the play. Furthermore, you will probably notice that the referee may seem to make late calls. This is due to a new variance of the rule, where the referee and his assistants only flag the offside when the player in the offside position actually touches the ball.
