Italy Beats France in Penalty Shootouts
Posted by Carlito on 2006-07-10 With a 1-1 score after regular and extra time, Italy finally beat France 5-3 in penalty shootouts to win their 4th World Cup title in history and their first since 24 years. The game took a familiar turn in the 6th minute when Malouda was brought down in the box by Materazzi, although the replay suggest it was more of a dive. Zidane, just like against Portugal, took the spot kick and scored with a tricky chip of the ball that hit the cross bar and then landed just inside the goal. Fortunately for the Italians, a Pirlo corner kick was then met by the head of a leaping Materazzi, who made up for the penalty he had awarded 12 minutes earlier. The rest of the match saw the French getting most of the chances but they simply couldn’t beat buffoon. The best chance came from a Zidane header from the penalty spot area that was brilliantly saved by Buffon in the second extra time. Moments later, Zidane exchanged words with Materazzi. As Zidane was walking away, Materazzi probably insulted him, because the French legend turned back and headbutted the Italian in the chest. This was all behind the play, and neither the referee nor the 2 linesmen saw the foul. However, the 4th referee saw everything and the referee finally showed a straight red to Zidane. It was a sad moment; Zidane was playing the last match of his amazing career but bowed out in the most disgraceful manner. The match then went to penalty kicks. Trezeguet hit the cross bar in the second French kick. That’s all it took, as Italy scored on their 5 kicks to beat France for the first time in many years. Deception for the French, joy for Italy, it was an eventful World Cup and it’s always sad to say goodbye… until next time!
