Germany Wins World Cup 2006 Opener
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-10

The opening World Cup 2006 match between Germany and Costa Rica was a delight for the fans. A total of 6 goals scored, and the host country saw their squad win 4-2 over an under matched Costa Rica side.

However, this victory for the Germans is far from being reassuring for their fans. While they were able to score goals and create a lot of occasions, even without Chelsea star midfielder Ballack, there's no doubt how shaky their defense is. Paolo Wanchope score two goals in two breakaways, where the German defense were completely unorganised. Germany will score goals, but when they meet teams who can attack back in a more regular fashion than Costa Rica - aside from those two goals, Costa Rica had few chances in the game and was barely able to cross the half of the field - Germany will have to rely on heroics from Arsenal goalkeeper to keep them in the game. And to be honest, I don't think he'll be able to do it.

In the other opening day match, Ecuador beat Poland 2-0.
