Day 7 England Ecuador and Germany are Through
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-15

Ecuador easily beat Costa Rica 3-0 today and at the same time assured their qualification for the second phase of the World Cup for the first time of their history. Tenerio (8th) scored early in the first half, while Delgado (54th) and Kaviedes (90th) completed the score sheet. Ecuador's victory also meant qualification for the German team.

England also went through, but for a moment (actually longer than that), it smelled like an upset. Trinidad and Tobago were able to hold off England until the 84th minute when Crouch headed goal a perfect Beckham cross. Gerrard then scored late with a nice long shot that gave no chances to Shaka Hislop.

However, England looked exactly like the side that pained to get 3 points from Paraguay last time around. Trinidad could have even taken the lead if it wasn't for John Terry's goal line clearance at the end of the first half. On the bright side, Wayne Rooney made a second half appearance. Now that he's back, perhaps England will benefit from a reduction of the media coverage of his injury and hopefully, without the distraction, play better in the rounds of finals. They really need to.

Talking about disappointing performances, Sweden were able to beat Paraguay 1-0, thanks to a late goal from Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljunberg. The Swedes World Cup run so far has been average, and that's being generous. Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn't the player who amazed us at the last Euro and was even replaced for the second half against Paraguay by Allback.

Sweden now only needs a tie against England or a Trinidad and Tobago lost or tie against Paraguay to go through. But they will have to improve their form if they plan on taking it any further after that.
