Day 6 Spain Starts Off With A Bang
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-15

Spain played their first World Cup 2006 match against Ukraine, and what a start it was. The Spaniards crushed their opponents 4-0, probably the best soccer display by any country so far.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso started the massacre with a header from a corner kick that beat the Ukrainian goalkeeper early in the first half. A couple of minutes later, it was David Villa - who's starting 11 inclusion meant a bench warmer spot for legend Raul - who scored from a close range free kick that deflected on the Ukraine wall to beat keeper Shovkovskiy.

Spain dominated the first half, and AC Milan's ace striker Andriy Shevchenko wasn't getting much support nor service and was practically invisible.

The game was sealed early in the second half, after the referee gave a very questionable penalty shot off a Torres breakaway and a even more question red card to Ukrainian defender Vashchuk. Villa scored from the ensuing spot kick. Torres would finish the scoreline for Spain, after finishing a Zidane-like play making run by Barcelona defender Puyol.

Spain looks strong and could arguably be the best team in the tournament currently, after Brazil's dismal display. The Spaniards have a deep team, which allowed them to pull players like Raul, Albeda and Cesc Fabregas as substitutes from the bench, while they still had players like Reyes, Joaquin and Iniesta who didn't even get to make an appearance.

In the other matches, Tunisian Jaidi scored a late one to force a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia. Tunisia was the better side throughout the game, and took the lead in the first half. But the Saudis came to life in the second half and were able to take a 2-1 lead, late in the match. However, the Bolton defender scored with a header to give Tunisia a well deserved point.

Finally, Germany's Oliver Neuville scored a last minute winner in the 90th minute to help Germany beat 10 men Poland 1-0. Germany controlled the whole game, attacking and threatening the Poland goal throughout the match. Still, it seemed like Poland were about to hold on against their German rivals, even though they were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes left in the match. However, substitute Neuville, thanks to a great cross from other substitute Okondor, was able to net Germany to their second victory.
