Day 5 Brazil and France Shy Starts
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-13

Two of the big football countries were playing their first match today. At the very least, we can say it was a slow start for both team, especially France.

France played Switzerland to a 0-0 draw. The French had a couple of chances, and some would say that they should have been awarded a penalty shot when Thierry Henry' shot hit the hand of a Swiss defender in the box. However, the referee felt it was accidental.

The Swiss also had a number of chances, including a first half post strike from a free kick and a second half header that was nicely stopped by the French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez.

Brazil won their fixture 1-0 over Croatia. We expected an incredible display from Brazil, but the combination of a fierce Croatian side and an apparent uneasiness from the Brazilian as a team kept us from seeing a satisfying showcase of their skills.

Nonetheless, there was some Ronaldhinho flashes, and a brilliant shot from - one of my personal favorite - Kaka, which provided the only goal of the match, at the end of the first half. Croatia played well, especially striker Prso, and if it wasn't for poor finishing, could have easily pulled a goal back.

Hopefully, for all soccer fans, Brazil will only play better as the World Cup progress.

Finally, South Korea came back from a 0-1 deficit, to win their opening World Cup match 2-1.

Togo seemed at ease after scoring in the first half, thanks to Kader Mohamed, until the sending off of striker Jean-Paul Abalo in the second half. From the issuing spot kick, Chun-Soo Lee tied the game with a well placed free kick. Then, substitute Jung-Hwan Ahn, scored the winning goal with a fantastic shot.
