Day 3 The Young and The Old
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-12

Holland started their World Cup campaign on the good foot thanks to the great play of young Arjen Robben. The Chelsea striker scored the only goal of the match against Serbia & Montenegro, and was constant threat throughout the match, especially in the first half. His speed and incredible footwork was too much to handle for the Serbian side. Netherlands, overall played better, and showed great ball control. The introduction of Koroman at the end of the first half, gave a spark to Serbia & Montenegro which lasted in the second half, the Serbs looking more like the side who only allowed one goal in their qualifying group.

The two favorites, Argentina and Holland, are now ahead in the group of death, however much could change before the end of the group stage, Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro both showing in their losing match that they are not to be taken lightly.

Luis Figo proved that he still had a lot to offer and still a lot of speed for his age when he beat an Angola defender with a burst run and provided the pass for Pauleta's goal in the 4th minute. Portugal beat Angola 1-0. However, prior to the match, Portugal was expected to dominate the African side, but it was not the case. Angola had more than one occasion to tie the game, but were unable to beat keeper Ricardo. The Portuguese also had a couple of chances, C. Ronaldo rattling the crossbar with a fierce header from a corner kick amongst others. Nonetheless, Portugal will have to improve if they want to repeat their Euro 2004 form.

In the other game of the day, a strong Mexico side beat Iran 3-1.
