Day 24th Germany Takes Third Place
Posted by Carlito on 2006-07-08

Playing for the third position of the FIFA World Cup is always bitter sweet. Both teams can't help to wonder what could have been and often the third place game is a boring affair. It wasn't the case in the match between Germany and Portugal, both team battled hard, but in the end, it's Germany who had the better of their opponents 3-1. The first half produced good chances on both side. Each team having spells of domination, without being able to score a goal. After 45 minutes the score was still 0-0.

The second half was the Bastian Schweinsteiger show. He scored two goals and was responsible for Germany's other goal. His first goal came from a brilliant solo effort which ended with long distance hard shot that fooled Ricardo.

Schweinsteiger then saw his free kick deflected by Petit behind his goalkeeper. Petit was credited with the own goal. Schweinsteiger second goal was a repeat of his first, firing another long distance missile which curved away from Ricardo and in the back of the net.

Once again, Portugal was having trouble buying a goal despite creating good chances. Finally, a perfect cross from Figo was met by the header of diving Nuno Gomes to salvage something for the Portuguese.

There’s only one match left in the Germany 2006 World Cup as France and Italy will be battling for the most prestigious trophy in Berlin tomorrow.
