Day 23rd France beats Portugal 1 0
Posted by Carlito on 2006-07-06

The second semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup wasn’t as entertaining as the first one. Nonetheless, deserving France marched on by beating Portugal 1-0, thanks to a Zinedine Zidane penalty kick in the first half.

The first half saw good play from both side, but neither team were able to really trouble or even test goalkeepers Barthez and Ricardo. Finally in the 33rd minute, Thierry Henry won a spot kick for France, when he was tripped down by Carvalho. Zidane scored on the penalty kick even though Ricardo (once again) chose the right side.

In the second half Portugal pressed more but it just wasn’t there day. They weren’t getting the calls, and to be honest, they were diving a lot, including C. Ronaldo who was booed throughout the match, possibly for the Rooney incident.

Portugal’s best chance came from a C. Ronaldo free kick when Barthez made a mess of the shot, but Figo’s header on the rebound went over the goal. France held on and booked their place to the World Cup’s finals. They will try to repeat their 1998 run. They will face Italy, in what will be a rematch of the Euro 2000 semi-finals.
