Day 22nd Italy beats Germany 2 0
Posted by Carlito on 2006-07-06

The first semi-finals of the 2006 Germany FIFA World Cup was a fantastic one with both teams playing to win. Italy finally edged over Germany 2-0 with the two goals coming in the last 2 minutes of extra time.

90 minutes was not enough to decide a winner in this hard fought game. While Italy had the most possession, it was Germany who had the better chances in regular time, with Schneider, for instance, missing what was a clear chance to score.

Podolski also had a chance to put Germany in front but Gigi Buffon was magnificent just as he had been throughout this World Cup. In extra time, it was as if the two teams were playing without midfield players, the action going back and forth from one end to the end in matter of seconds, entertaining stuff.

Italy came close to score in extra time, with Gilardino and then Zambrotta both hitting the post and crossbar respectively. We would have to wait until the end of the second extra time to see a moment of brio from Andrea Pirlo who passed the ball smoothly to Fabio Grosso in the box. Grosso shot with his left foot a nice curling ball in the far corner.

With Germany pressing for a most needed equalizer, Italy then counter attacked; patient Gilardino slid the ball to an unmarked Del Piero who chipped the ball pass Lehmann.

It seems like a tradition for Italy to reach the finals every 12 years, having done so in 1970-1982-1994 and now 2006. They will be looking to do the same thing as in 1982 when they won their last World Cup.
