Day 20th Germany Italy
Posted by Carlito on 2006-07-01

We’re in the quarterfinals in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the stakes are high. Germany and Italy booked a meeting together for next Tuesday’s semi-finals. This means deception for Argentina and Ukraine who exited the World Cup.

The match between Germany and Argentina was an epic battle, which ended 1-1 after normal and extra time. Jens Lehman was the hero of the penalty kicks, by stopping the efforts of Ayala and Cambiasso, while his team mates scored four times, for the 4-2 penalty shootout victory.

It was Argentina who took the lead with an Ayala header from a corner kick from Riquelme early in the second half. However, instead of continuing to attack, Argentina started to protect their lead, even substituting their star playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme. Furthermore, their keeper also had to be replaced after being injured.

Finally, the threatening Germans equalized with about 10 minutes left in the game thanks to a header from close range from World Cup scoring leader Miroslav Klose. The match went into extra time but none of the two teams could get a goal. Jens Lehman (Kahn who?) would then make the German fans jump with joy by stopping two penalty shots and sending his team to the semi-finals.

In the other quarterfinal of the day, Italy beat Ukraine 3-0, although the score line doesn’t reflect how close the game really was. Zambrotta opened the score early in the first half, and it was a blow for the Ukrainians who were having good possession before that. The rest of the half was a game of chess with neither team getting the better.

In the second half, Ukraine came very close to changing the allure of the game with some incredible scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, Buffon’ skills and, let’s admit it, Italy’s luck at times kept Ukraine from scoring.

Luca Toni would then score two goals in the span of 10 minutes to end all Ukrainian hopes. Italy’s defence once again prevailed - they have allowed only one goal (an own goal against the USA) - and will without a doubt be put to the test against Germany Tuesday in the first semi-final.
