Day 2 A Free Kick Affair
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-11

Well England won their opening game, at the sweat of their brow. England came out strong in the first half, but was only able to score once, off a Beckham free kick, which was put in the net by one of Paraguay's defender. In the second half, England did, well nothing. They were able to hold on to their lead and bank three points, in the midst of some good opportunities for the opposite side, Valdes getting more than one chance to put the two countries levelled.

Argentina won their first game in the group of death against the Ivory Coast, 2-1. The best team on the pitch was however was the Ivorian side, who dominated every stats except the most important one, goals scored. Argentina took the lead early in the game, off a Riquelme free kick, which came loose in front of the net. Crespo only had to tap it in to pull his team in front. Later in the half, brilliant Riquelme again, sent a through pass to Saviola at the edge of the box. The Ivorian failed in their offside trap attempt, and Saviola one time touched the ball to put it beneath the keeper.

Two unlucky goals, but all through the game it's the Ivory Coast who looked the more menacing, missing golden chances. In the 82nd minute, Didier Drogba pulled one back and they kept the pressure on until the end of the game, with no avail.

In the other match of the day, the strong Swedes were unable to beat amazing 37 year old Trinidad&Tobago keeper Shaka Hislop. Sweden attacked all through the game and benefited from a 11 against 10 men advantage in the second half. However, Dwight Yorke' squad held on for the 0-0 draw.
