Day 18th Italy Ukraine

The Germany 2006 FIFA World Cup is becoming one of controversy and unusual incidents. Today, we saw a ten men Italy beat Australia 1-0 with a dubious penalty, while Switzerland were returned home even though they have not allowed any goals in the whole tournament.
Underdog Socceroos almost achieved a big upset as they came close to beat Italy. The Italians had the better chances in the first half, but were not able to come up with a goal. Early in the second half, Materazzi was shown a straight red for a two legged tackle.
The match drastically changed, with the Aussies now attacking and Italy on the back pedal. Yet, the Italian defense held strong, and the game seemed to be headed for extra time, when the referee gave a penalty in injury time for a questionable foul on Grosso. Totti played the hero by scoring on the spot kick and sending the Aussies home.
In the other World Cup 1/8 of finals, Ukraine squeezed through to the next round by beating Switzerland in penalty shootout. Switzerland exited the World Cup without allowing any goals to their opposition.
The game itself was boring and lacked any excitement. There was one chance for both sides in the first half, but nothing more for the 90 minutes of regular play and the 30 minutes of extra time.
Shevchenko missed the first penalty shot, but Ukraine would score on the next 3 while Switzerland missed all their 3 shots. It will be Italy Ukraine in the quarterfinals.
