Day 16th Germany Argentina
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-25

We are now in the knockout stage in the Germany 2006 World Cup, and the first games of the 1/8 finals were being played today. First off, Germany outclassed Sweden and walked to the next phase with an easy 2-0 victory.

Germany stroked early, Lukas Podolski jumped on a rebound from a nice Klose move and scored from just inside the box in the 4th minute. Podolski would score again 8th minutes later, when Klose attracted three Swedes defenders before sliding a pass in the opposite direction for Podolski, who side footed the ball into the back of the net.

The game could have easily finished four or five zero, as Germany was getting chances throughout the game. The Swedes fell to 10 men in the first half, and that was practically it for them. Still, Larsson received a generous call from the referee in the second half and was granted a penalty. However, Larsson kicked the ball over the net, reminding a similar spot kick by Baggio back in 1994.

In the end, Germany' stars played well while Sweden's were just out of form. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was horrible, pulling his tricks at the wrong moments, and Ljungberg runs would see him always end up on the ground, but he wasn't getting the calls.

The other match of the day was a classic, which will undeniably be remembered as one of the best game of the 2006 World Cup. In the end, Argentina came out the winner over Mexico with a 2-1 score.

From the start, you could tell it would be a great match, with Mexico dominating possession and taking the game to the Argentinians. It payed off too when Rafa Marquez put Mexico in the lead in the 5th minute. The goal woke up Argentina, who retaliated swiftly in the 10th minute with a Crespo goal from a corner kick.

The rest of the game was an affair of great intensity, skills, and brilliant goalkeeping. 90th minutes wasn't enough to decide of a winner and we had to go in overtime. Although, some could (rightly) argue that Argentina should have went 1 up in the second half when Messi put the goal in the net, only to see the linesman flag an offside that wasn't so.

Nonetheless, Argentina would get their goal in the first overtime, when Maxi Rodriguez chested a cross field Sorin pass and left volley the ball before it hit the ground behind helpless Sanchez. It was a fantastic strike worthy of an amazing game.

Argentina and Germany will now clash in a quarter finals that may be worthy of any World Cup final.
