Day 15th France Spain Switzerland Ukraine
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-24

A lot was left to be played for in the final day of group G Germany World Cup 2006 matches. Togo was already out but France, Switzerland and South Korea could all still qualify. Switzerland claimed the first place of the group by defeating South Korea 2-0, goals coming from Senderos - who unfortunately dislocated his shoulder during the game and will miss the rest of the World Cup - and Frei.

France absolutely needed to win to march on, and they did, beating Togo 2-0. For the first time of the tournament, France looked in control and dominant, but had to wait until the second half to see goals from Viera and Henry.

Spain was already guaranteed to qualify for the next round, and they ended their group stage with a 1-0 victory against Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia finished last of the group while Spain took first and will now face France in the next round.

Meanwhile, Ukraine booked their place in the next round by winning 1-0 against Tunisia. Former AC Milan start striker Shevchenko was brought down in the box in the second half, and scored himself from the spot kick. Ukraine will face Switzerland in the next round.
