Day 14th Brazil Ghana Italy Australia
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-24

Group E of the Germany 2006 World Cup saw Italy and Ghana qualify in a group where any of the 4 teams could still qualify ahead of the final match. Italy eliminated the Czech Republic - who were the favorite after Brazil to win the World Cup - by beating them 2-0, with goals by Materazzi and Inzaghi.

Meanwhile, Ghana beat the United States 2-1 and made sure they would make it to the next phase. Draman opened the score for Ghana, but Dempsey tied things up. But then, Appiah scored on a controversial penalty, which sealed the fate of the American side.

In group F, Japan took a surprise lead against Brazil when Tamada scored in the 16th minute. Unfortunately, Ronaldo awaken by scoring two goals - and tieing Gerd Mueller World Cup overall scoring record - in a 4-1 affair. The other Brazil goals came from Juninho and Gilberto. Brazil are undefeated and will face Ghana in the next round.

In the other game, Australia tied Croatia 2-2, but that was enough to see them through to the next round where they will meet Italy. It was a crazy game, where Australia finished with 10 men and Croatia with nine (but it should have been 8, as one player was booked three time!), and Australia had to come back from behind twice. Srna and Kovac scored for Croatia, while Moore and Kewell responded for the Aussies. Australia have a big task ahead of them, but remain confident.
