Day 13th Argentina Mexico Netherlands Portugal
Posted by Carlito on 2006-06-24

In one of the biggest expected clash of the Germany 2006 World Cup, neither Argentina nor Holland could come up on top. The match finished 0-0 and both team finished with 7 points, Argentina getting the top of the group position thanks to goal difference.

In the other match of group C, the Ivory Coast got their first win in a World Cup, after beating Serbia and Montenegro, by coming back from 2 goals down to finally win 3-2. Nikola Zigic and Sasa Ilic scored back to back for the Serbo-Montenegrins, but Dindane would then scored twice, the first on a penalty shot, and substitute Kalou then scored late, him too on a penalty shot. Both teams were already eliminated, but Ivory Coast can walk away proud of their World Cup performance while, it's a whole other story for Serbia and Montenegro.

In group D, Portugal beat Mexico 2-1. Maniche and Simao (penalty) scored early for Portugal, but Fonseca retaliated for Mexico before the end of the first half. Mexico would then miss a penalty, and lose a man. Portugal looked very strong, even if they rested Deco, Pauleta and C. Ronaldo for their final match.

Angola hence had a chance to qualify, but a 1-1 tie with Iran wasn't the result needed. Angola did take the lead in the second half through Flavio, but Iran would equalised moments later, which is fair, since Iran had been the better side in the game.

Both teams are out, and two great matches are ahead, Argentina-Mexico and Holland-Portugal.
