Chelsea Buying Trouble Transfer by Transfer
Posted by Carlito on 2006-08-14

The Champions League final qualifying round has started, the English, Spanish and Italian leagues are about to kick off the 2006-2007 season while things have already started in Germany and France.

Coming from the Germany World Cup, there was a lot of movement and changes. Chelsea and Real Madrid are probably the two teams that will align the most new game changing players Chelsea were able to sign both Andry Shevchenko and Michael Ballack over the past months, while Madrid recently swooped Ruud Van Nistelrooy from Manchester United, and signed Emerson and Cannavaro from relegated Juventus.

Chelsea was a dominating force in the Premiership last season, but failed to have success in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Real finished second to Barcelona in La Liga for a second year straight and had a disappointing run in the Champions League.

It seems Chelsea is aiming at becoming the new Real of Europe. Buying big stars with big bucks and aligning a dominating force on the field. However, they should be careful, as in the past years we’ve witnessed that big names don't necessarily translate into wins. While Madrid has been able to remain amongst the top clubs in Europe, they have not won a title for some years now and had spats of dismal football performance.

Acquiring stars like Sheva and Ballack may come back to bite Mourinho' side. How long will some other stars like Robben, Cole, Wright-Phillips accept playing second fiddle or share playing time. Furthermore, egos might come into play and clash.

Perhaps that's what the Premiership needs, a faltering Chelsea club; I would hate to see another season where the most interesting race is for second place or to avoid relegation…
